Schedule with PSI
After CSLB approval you get a notice to schedule. Book early and, if life gets in the way, reschedule at least 48 hours ahead so you do not forfeit your fee.

Arrive early with the right ID
Bring current government-issued photo ID with a signature, matching your application name exactly, plus your PSI confirmation. Late arrivals can be turned away as a missed appointment.

What happens if you fail a section
Failing one section is common and it is not the end of your application. The mechanic is straightforward:
- You keep any section you passed. If you pass Law and Business but fail your trade exam, you only retake the trade exam.
- You are eligible to retake the failed exam after 21 calendar days.
- All retakes must happen inside your 18-month application window, which starts when CSLB accepts your application.
- Retake fees are paid to PSI when you reschedule.
How many times can you take the contractor exam?
CSLB does not cap the number of attempts, but every attempt has to fall inside the 18-month application window, and each retake carries a PSI fee. If the window closes before you pass, your application expires and you have to reapply and pay the $450 application fee again.
